Women More Likely Than Men To Have Been Told They Had Sinusitis
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 29.5 million or 14% non-institutionalized adults are diagnosed with sinusitis in the U.S. 12.5 million visits to office-based physicians occur annually with 1.1 million to hospital outpatient centers due to Chronic Sinusitis. Approximately 40 million Americans are affected by sinusitis every year, with 33 million cases of chronic sinusitis reported annually to the CDC. Nearly one in three Americans, or 90 million people, is affected when sinusitis is considered together with allergic rhinitis, asthma, and chronic bronchitis.

According to the CDC’s 2005 report on selected respiratory diseases, women are more likely than men to have been told they had sinusitis. Asian adults were less likely than black or white adults to have been told in the past 12 months they had sinusitis. Hispanic adults had lower rates of sinusitis than white adults and had lower rates for sinusitis than black adults. The percentage of adults with sinusitis was higher in the South than in any other region of the United States. Individuals with combined family income of at least $75,000 or more are nearly twice as likely to have sinusitis than those poorer than them.

Where health insurance is concerned, CDC’s 2005 report for patients who had sinusitis and under age 65 shows that 18,114 had private, 2,043 had Medicaid, 1,085 had other and 3,400 were uninsured. The report is not as stark when the over 65 years of age population is concerned – 2,934 with private, 372 with Medicaid and Medicare, 1,174 with Medicare only and 320 with other. The large metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) (population of 1,000,000 or more) reported a slight increase of sinusitis at 11,735 than the small MSA (population of less than 1,000,000) at 10,797. The population not living in a metropolitan area reported 6,984 cases of sinusitis from the sample survey. In terms of geography, the highest number of sinusitis cases was found in the South (12,481). Second in that category was the Midwest with 7,012, third was the Northeast with 5,413 and fourth was the West with 4,611 cases.
