xCAT® ENT Wins 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award
Xoran Technologies, Inc. received a 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA) for its xCAT ENT, a compact, mobile CT scanner.
Traditionally, patients needing diagnostic scans had to make their way to the imaging department of a hospital because of the immobile nature of the massive room-sized imaging devices. Xoran wanted to streamline the imaging process by bringing imaging to the patient at the location where the patient is treated. Xoran shrunk CT technology into an ultra portable device, a fraction of the size of a full-body scanner and about 1/10 the weight.
The recently released xCAT ENT was designed to bring real-time imaging to ENT surgeons in the OR, where the patient and surgeon need it most. The engineering, design and interface work by Insight Product Development helped Xoran achieve the function and aesthetics needed for a successful and groundbreaking device that is exclusively distributed by Medtronic ENT, a well-respected manufacturer and distributor of surgical products for use by Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists.
The MDEA is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions or advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.
A comprehensive review of the entries was performed by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine and diagnostics.
"We are honored to be recognized by the MDEA judges," said Pedja Sukovic, President and co-founder of Xoran Technologies, Inc. “The mobility, size and agility of xCAT ENT will help a lot of people, currently by assisting ENT surgeons in the OR and eventually by imaging neuro patients directly in ICU. We appreciate this recognition and the ability to advance diagnostic technologies.”
The 2008 MDEA Winners will be honored at a ceremony during the Medical Design & Manufacturing East Conference and Exposition on June 4th in New York City.
